Intimate Hyperpigmentation and How to Solve It

Many of us have this same issue, our intimate parts are darker than the rest of our body. Now let me be very clear in saying this, darker pigment can be completely normal. The way our bodies are made up we can have deeper tones throughout our entire body. But for this blog, we are specifically talking about intimate hyperpigmentation, yes! Down there hyperpigmentation.

What is Hyperpigmentation

As mentioned, in previous blogs, hyperpigmentation is the overproduction of melanin, melanocytes that are on the skin. There are different types of hyperpigmentation, more commonly small spots such as freckles, age spots, melasma, and of course blemishes. There is also hyperpigmentation that takes up more space on the body and is normally found in the folds of the skin or where the sun can be exposed more such as the armpits, knees, and elbows. And then there is the intimate area, which is can be caused by other factors that we will talk about it later.

The Generalized Melanin hyperpigmentation in intimate areas is the darkening across a large area like the groin, inner thighs, vulva, mons pubis, and other relative places. This can be from various different aspects such as hormones; a lot of changes can be caused by the estrogen levels in women which can be from pregnancy, menopause, post-partum, and contraceptives.

It can also be caused by other factors such as

  • Low iron levels

  • Diseases

  • Certain medications

But it can also be caused by your day-to-day activities such as

  • Hair removal techniques

  • Hygiene

  • Chaffing and Rubbing

But also remember that certain skin types and body make-ups have higher melanin production rates and in return can have darker areas.

Now to the fun part, how can you reduce the appearance of pigmentation in your intimate area? Now we have all heard and seen many tik tok trends and possibly even attempted to try them- but must I say- DON’T. Forget about all the turmeric soaps and even some of the exfoliation techniques you have used on other parts of your body.

To not just decrease the appearance but minimize the reappearance we advise seeing a professional and receiving a depigmentation peel to balance the pigment in the intimate area. This will be followed up with homecare to expedite the results so you can achieve the desired results you are looking for. Clients can also use various products that have skin-lightening ingredients such as kojic acid, hydroquinone, tranexamic acid, and niacinamide.
